Reception (Foundation Stage 2 – FS2)

Age Group: 4 to 5 years

Reception, also known as Foundation Stage 2 (FS2), is the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at The British School in Gothenburg. It is a year of tremendous growth where children build confidence, independence, and a strong readiness for formal schooling in Year 1.

A Confident Step Forward

In FS2, children continue to develop through purposeful play and guided learning. Our experienced Early Years educators nurture each child’s curiosity, while gently introducing more structured learning experiences that support foundational academic skills and social-emotional growth.

Curriculum & Learning Approach

Our FS2 program follows the UK’s EYFS framework, ensuring continuity in learning and development from FS1. The environment remains child-centred, creative, and supportive, with a growing emphasis on early literacy and numeracy.

Key Features:

  • Blended Learning Approach: A balance of play-based discovery and teacher-guided sessions to deepen understanding and prepare for Key Stage 1.

  • School Readiness Focus: Activities are designed to enhance listening, attention, fine motor skills, early writing, and problem-solving.

  • Personalised Support: Children are supported at their individual levels to ensure they meet developmental milestones with confidence.

Areas of Learning and Development

1. Prime Areas (continuing to be strengthened):
  • Communication and Language: Expanding vocabulary, storytelling, and conversational skills.

  • Physical Development: Developing control and coordination for both gross and fine motor skills.

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Building resilience, cooperation, and emotional understanding.

2. Specific Areas (with increased focus):
  • Literacy: Recognising letters and sounds (phonics), beginning to read simple words, and practicing early writing.

  • Mathematics: Understanding numbers, patterns, and simple operations such as counting, adding, and subtracting.

  • Understanding the World: Exploring cultures, nature, science, and technology through hands-on inquiry.

  • Expressive Arts and Design: Creating through art, music, dance, and imaginative play.

Assessment

  • EYFS Profile: A formal assessment is completed at the end of the Reception year. This provides a comprehensive overview of the child’s development and readiness for Year 1.

  • Ongoing Observation: Teachers continuously observe and record learning progress to adapt teaching strategies and support.

Partnership with Families

Open communication and collaboration with families are vital in FS2. We value parents as partners in learning and provide regular updates, meetings, and shared goals for your child’s success and wellbeing.
